Creative Under Deck Bar Ideas for Fun Outdoor Entertaining
By Dave KileSpring has sprung, and summer is almost here! Time to think about getting your drink on – and entertaining with libations! We have put together some fun and creative ideas to help transform your outdoor living space and/or under-deck area into a fabulous outdoor bar.
Tiki Theme
Let’s hit this one first! People love the beach, good food, great cocktails, and a fun theme. Set up your patio or deck bar tiki style. A tiki bar is relatively easy to do. A few tiki torches, some Hawaiian-themed decorations, and a pop of tropical color will make this work. All you need is the coconut drink cups!
Poolside Paradise
You don’t need a pool to do this one, though a pool is nice. Instead, set up your poolside backyard bar so your guests and family can make an easy trip to the countertop. Use some swim-themed or fish-themed decorations. Nautical-themed items work as well. Don’t want to do an outdoor bar area as much as an outdoor kitchen? No problem – we’ve got you covered; keep reading!
Outdoor Kitchen Bar
You could set up either a traditional bar area or install a grilling station with a dining area. People of all ages have to eat, right? So let them enjoy their BBQ, sandwiches, cocktails – or mock-tails – and breathe fresh air. Some kitchen ideas are fairly simple and can be a DIY; some are more complex, so it’s best to seek the help of a reputable contractor.
Fire Pit and Seating Area
A fire pit adds a camping-like atmosphere to your deck bar or patio seating area. It’s great to enjoy the night air and to be able to gather around a chiminea or outdoor fireplace and share stories. You could install a small dining area or single dining table next to this to make your outdoor nights warm and romantic. String lights can help enhance the mood.
Hot Tub and Hot Toddies
Speaking of romance, this is a perfect setup if you have a hot tub or are thinking about getting one. Install a hot tub adjacent to your bar counter. Imagine your nights lounging in a hot tub while holding your favorite drink and having a good conversation. It’s a perfect way to enjoy life after hours.
Minimalist Mini-Bar
Have a small space? You may have a first-floor apartment or limited room behind your townhouse. That’s no reason to fret and think you can’t have a fantastic entertaining space. Instead, get a bar cart and make a seating area. A few outdoor chairs, perhaps a small table and a movable bar (e.g., a bar cart), will help fill the need for a drink, snack, or outside meal. If you want more privacy, landscape with some large potted plants and maybe utilize a bamboo shade.
Made in the Shade
If you have more of a patio setup with an overhang or want to install a bar under your deck, this is great for keeping it covered. Don’t let the sun’s UV rays take away any of your enjoyment. Set up an outside living room to converse with friends, work from home, or meditate. Setting up a simple bar, such as a bar cart, is nice. You could also install a full bar and avoid the sun’s rays. A pergola is another option to maintain some shade.
Pallet Perfection
This is a wonderful option for those who want to have a rustic look. Wooden pallets are often available for cheap or even free. Use pallets to create a bar for those who want the reclaimed wood look. Use wine barrels with seating pads as bar stools. Materials like brick, cinderblock, and even concrete are original ways to set up an outside deck bar area or an outdoor patio bar; you also could match your patio pavers if you like.
Indoor/Outdoor Option
Homeowners who entertain a lot may prefer this option. They have guests and family over but said guests and family could not decide if they want to be in or out. Get the best of both worlds! One of our favorite design ideas for a bar plan is to double the possibilities! Set up an inside home bar right by your deck or patio entrance, then make a patio bar near that. You could also do this with a basement bar.
And Finally… a “Getaway”
Last, why don’t we just bring the whole living-dining room combo outside? This possibility is more intricate and a fantastic option for those who live most of their life outdoors. A deck makes this even better! Install a bar area and seating, or splurge on an outdoor kitchen bar. This option may require a remodel or some changes or additions to your deck and home design to make this a reality. This is a grand “getaway” for those who adore nature, enjoy a few drinks, and don’t want to stray too far from home.
Key Factors to Consider When Designing an Under Deck Bar
Whether you have wooden deck boards or composite decking, you need to waterproof your deck. Additionally, an under-deck drainage system is essential to help keep mold away and your bar set up dry. Finally, if you live in a particularly humid or rainy area, consider enclosing your bar with heavy-duty plastic windows or plexiglass. To improve the ventilation, install some ceiling fans.
Tips for Creating a Cozy Atmosphere for Your Under Deck Bar
With all of these creative options and potential concepts, it’s a good idea to think about what mood you’re trying to convey. Throw rugs, pillows, and soft blankets with invited friends and family will go a long way. Whether it be lively, family-fun, romantic, or relaxing, your choice of lighting, music, and theme can have a lot to do with making a memorable day or night. Of course, the best thing (besides a fully stocked bar) is having the style and provisions to accompany it.
